The new Z33, House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture in Hasselt, Belgium opened officially on Saturday 14 March with its first exhibitions. Designed by rising Italian architecture star Francesca Torzo, the building is a home for exhibitions of experimental art and architecture. Torzo has designed it with forensic attention to every detail, including the ironmongery. Made by specialist ironmonger izé, this includes lever handles, pull handles, window handles and bathroom locking sets. All the elements are supremely elegant, and the larger pieces have special indentations for the thumb to make them comfortable to hold and operate. Dave Bradshaw, managing director of izé, said ‘Francesca Torzo is a demanding client in the very best way. We embraced her desire to make every element of the building special. It is important to get the ironmongery right, as this is one of the few elements that visitors to a building touch and therefore it makes a lasting impression.’
